Salon-de-Provence is a picturesque market town set in the Provence countryside. Stroll around the historic centre and admire a jewel box of medieval buildings. Beyond the ancient town walls is a landscape of rolling hills and rugged mountains waiting to be discovered.

Things to do in Salon-de-Provence

Centuries-old stone walls enclose the atmospheric historic centre. Enter through one of the original gates and get lost in a labyrinth of cobbled streets, alleys and squares. Built in the 17th century, La Porte de l'Horloge is one of the most impressive gates. It’s topped with an ornate clock tower and a pair of astronomy-inspired sundials.

Stroll along the pedestrianised main street lined with beautifully restored medieval buildings. Cafes spill onto the sidewalks and serve coffee, croissants and “oreillette” citrus zest donuts, a local specialty. Dine at bistros to order classic Provencal dishes like “ratatouille” harvest vegetable stew and “bouillabaisse” fish soup.

Visit the impressive military museum housed in Chateau de l'Emperi. Accessed by a grand stone staircase, the stronghold dates back to the 10th century. Exhibits cover centuries of military history, from battles led by King Louis XIV to World War I. Enjoy sweeping views over the town from the battlements.

Use Salon-de-Provence as a base to explore the countryside. Rent a bike and cycle along scenic roads framed by vineyards and olive groves. Hike in the Chaîne des Alpilles mountains and visit charming Provencal villages like Baux-de-Provence. Perched on a rocky bluff and crowned by a medieval fortress, the village is one of the prettiest in Provence.
