About Bishop

Surrounded by the Sierra Nevada and White Mountains, Bishop is often called “California’s Hidden Treasure” and is teeming with trout, wildflower meadows and red fir forests. The area hosts a renowned trout derby and week-long mule festival every year and is also blessed with hiking trails, rock climbing, hot springs and an enthralling Native American cultural centre.

Bishop Creek offers fishing, kayaking and rafting, while the larger Owen’s River hosts the annual Blake Jones Trout Derby. Stake out a spot on the riverbanks for trout fishing or rent a boat to float down the scenic river. Trails offer horseback riding and cycling, while the surrounding area bursts with wildflower colour in spring.

More challenging trails beckon within Ansel Adams Wilderness/Inyo National Forest, where the famous nature photographer captured California’s majesty. Forest activities include rock climbing on Mt. Whitney and hiking the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest. In winter, don some snow gear for skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling.

Explore the town’s cultural connections at Laws Railroad Museum, which showcases early-Western lifestyle and train memorabilia. Dig deeper into the past at Owens Valley Cultural Center, which houses artefacts and antiquities from original inhabitants of the Paiute and Shoshone nations.
