Phnom Kulen National Park spreads gloriously across the Phnom Kulen Mountain massif, offering a nature-infused getaway less than two hours’ drive from Siem Reap. As a sacred site for both Hindus and Buddhists, the mountain is a pilgrimage destination with more than 50 Angkorian temples and an enormous reclining sandstone Buddha at Preah Ang Thom pagoda.
Make your way to Kbal Spean River for a fascinating look at the “River of a Thousand Lingas”. Ornate linga carvings appear throughout the river banks and beds, depicting the phallic symbol of Shiva, which blesses the flowing waters. Splash some water on your face and hands for good health and good luck.
You can hire a motorcycle to reach Sra Damrei, known in English as the Elephant Pond. A life-sized stone elephant guards the mountain, along with statues of lions and other animals. Afterwards, swim beneath Kulen Waterfall and gather picnic supplies from on-site food stalls.
