About Troodos

Troodos is a charming village surrounded by lush forests and towering peaks. The village is a launchpad for outdoor adventures in the Troodos Mountains, including the challenging hike up Mt Olympus. Ancient churches and monasteries make Troodos a rewarding destination for history buffs.

Things to do in Troodos

Mt Olympus towers 1,952 metres over Troodos and is the island’s tallest peak. If you don’t feel confident summiting the peak, the Artemis Trail is a great alternative and loops around the base of the mountain. It takes around three hours to complete and winds through sun-dappled black pine forests and past the ruins of centuries-old strongholds built by the Venetians.

Kykkos Monastery was founded in the 11th century and recalls the island’s ancient roots. It’s perched on a mountain peak and commands sweeping views over the surrounding mountains and forests. The lavish monastery is filled with treasures, including religious icons made from gleaming mother-of-pearl and tortoiseshell.

Beautiful Panagia Forviotissa is nestled in the Solea Valley and fringed by the Adelphi Forest. The interior is decorated with colourful Byzantine frescoes, some more than 900 years old. A picturesque two-hour hiking trail starts next to the church and takes you to the neighbouring village of Agios Theodoros.

The Troodos Mountains are dotted with boutique wineries, which take advantage of the rich soil and sunny climate. In addition to classic varietals such as Merlot, Cabernet and Sauvignon Blanc, you can also try wines made from indigenous grapes like Mavro and Xynisteri. Fill your stomach with a traditional “meze” lunch in a local village.

Getting around Troodos

Troodos is compact and easy to get around on foot, though you’ll need a rental car to explore surrounding sights and attractions at your own pace. The village is a 1.5-hour drive from Nicosia and Paphos. Larnaca International Airport is a 1.5-hour drive away.
