Heron Island Resort

LikedThe location is perfect without doubt.

DislikedThe facilities are not ideal as no air-conditioner and not fly screen. We suffered a ship cancellation so we had to stay on the island for another two days and the resort only can give us 30% off which is not our fault. They also agreed to give us coupons for activities, however they refused at last.

LikedBreakfast selection was good on the whole. Water sports and nature rambles were very good. Beach was beautiful.

DislikedBreakfast- no fried eggs or omelette, hash browns were fried to a crisp..Evening meals were really poor. We sent our curry back the first night as it didn't resemble curry at all. Second night fish could not be called a meal as it was so frugal. We missed meals for our next 2 nights as they were such poor value for the money. Just resorted to fruit. Accommodation was far more basic than we expected or are used to for the money. Resembled more of a school field centre or hostel.

LikedHeron Island was gorgeous. The rooms have fans which were good enough to keep us cool in April. We had a great beach view. Lots of birds mean there's lots of poo so can't leave things on the verandah. It's great that snorkeling gear and breakfast are included in the room rate.

DislikedThere is only one place to eat and, while you expect "island prices" it did seem to be gouging. $36 was the cheapest main meal at dinner (vegetarian) ranging up to $58. The food wasn't exceptional either which made it harder to spend the money.

LikedThe island is magnificent and 3 star accommodation was good enough and as expected for an eco island. The research centre is really interesting and the turtle hatching was really great. The island is super easy to walk around and explore with lots of bird life and marine life. You can easily see lots of marine life just snorkeling off the beach or standing on the jetty, but you can also do trips further out for diving and snorkelling. There was entertainment a couple of nights in the bar and the performer was really great. Excellent song choices and entertained the audience well. We didn't have kids with us but it looked like the events organised for Easter Sunday were done well.
