From rainbow-coloured poke bowls to fresh-baked banana bread, Wailuku is a great place to try Hawaiian favourites. The dish is a Hawaiian classic and features a fried egg, hamburger patty and gravy served on a bed of white rice.

Enjoy a show at the historic Iao Theatre. The beautifully restored theatre was built in the 1920s and features a Spanish Mission façade. It’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places and continues to host plays, musicals and other events.

Wailuku is a gateway to the spectacular Iao Valley. The lush, jungle-covered Iao Needle towers over the valley and is one of the wettest places in the world. Waterfalls cascade down the 685-metre-tall pinnacle, which is best viewed from the bridge near the main carpark.

Kaʻahumanu Church offers a glimpse of the island’s missionary past. The Gothic-style church was built in the 1870s by Christian missionaries and named after a Hawaiian queen. Stroll around the churchyard and enjoy sweeping views across the valley.
