About Nara Park

Nestled at the foot of Mount Wakakusa is Nara Park, one of Japan’s oldest and most beautiful parks. Located in central Nara, it is home to some of the city’s main attractions which include Nara National Museum, Kasuga-taisha and Todaiji. Over 1,200 Sika deer roam freely around the park, as lovely tea gardens and temples transport visitors back to a bygone era.

Nara Park is classified as a national treasure, and the Sika deer who frequent it, messengers of the gods. It’s a wonderful area for wildlife and landscape photography. With changing colours of the seasons, the park becomes a magical haven of natural beauty. Begin at Nara National Museum, an imposing building with an art museum displaying Japanese Buddhist art. The museum, established in 1889, showcases Buddhist statues, Japanese ceremonial objects and unusual painted scrolls. A short walk through the park and visitors will reach Todaiji, the Great Eastern Temple. It was constructed in 752, as head temple of all Buddhist Temples in Japan. The exquisite exterior architecture is impressive to all, offering a glimpse into Japan of old. Inside, Daibutsuden, the Big Buddha hall is the world’s largest wooden building. It is home to Japan’s largest bronze Buddha statue which dominates the hall at the height of 15 metres. Towards the southern edge of the park, Wakamiya Shrine and Kasuga-taisha offer visitors the opportunity to explore two Shinto shrines, the latter dating back 1300 years. A mesmerising sight, Kasuga-taisha is famous for its lanterns which can be found dangling from the buildings. They also light up the shrine during the Lantern Festivals, held each year.

Nara Park is just five minutes’ walk from Kintetsu Nara Station or 20 minutes on foot from JR Nara Station. There are also several bus stops around the perimeter of the park. Taxis are also available. Once inside the park, it is possible to walk to all the shrines, temples and museums. It can take around 30 minutes to walk between the park’s attractions.

Nara Park was established in the 1300s, making it one of Japan’s most ancient parklands. Local folklore states that the Sika deer wandering the park were sacred and up until 1637, any harming of the deer was considered a capital offence. Today, they are considered a national treasure, their free roaming status among temples and shrines attracts visitors of all ages.
