About Portland, ME

Set around a 19th-century port and vibrant waterfront area, Portland lies on a picturesque peninsula in Casco Bay. It’s made a name in recent years for its burgeoning gastronomy scene, with a collection of eclectic cafes and gourmet restaurants creating a foodie haven.

Things to do in Portland

Wander the charismatic streets of the Old Port area, which is packed with one-of-a-kind shops, art galleries and enticing watering holes. Visit after dark when the streets are illuminated with gas lanterns and feast on locally-caught seafood in one of the many restaurants.

Admire works by some of America’s most acclaimed artists at the Portland Museum of Art, including a number of pieces by local artists. The museum is set across three different buildings, including an early-19th-century Federal-style house and a postmodern design by renowned architect I.M. Pei.

Spend an afternoon strolling through Cape Elizabeth’s Fort Williams Park, which boasts magnificent coastal views and is home to one of Maine’s oldest lighthouses. Wander amidst the ruins of the old fort that once guarded the entrance to Casco Bay, with World War II bunkers and gun emplacements still visible today.

Travelling with kids? Visit the Children’s Museum of Maine, which houses an excellent selection of interactive exhibits. There’s an indoor rock-climbing wall and a model farm, as well as a camera obscura that projects expansive views of Portland’s downtown area.

Getting around Portland

Portland International Jetport is around 10 minutes’ drive from the downtown area and has flights to destinations across the United States. There are regular trains to Boston from the Portland Transportation Center, while local buses connect all corners of the city.
