Where to stay in Veliky Novgorod

About Veliky Novgorod

Nestled on the Volkhov River, Veliky Novgorod is one of Russia’s oldest cities, dating back to 859. It’s home to fortress walls, notable monuments and UNESCO-listed historical landmarks, in addition to a history museum showcasing Russian icon paintings.

Things to do

Walk around Veliky Novgorod’s Kremlin (city center) to admire some of Russia’s most important historical sites. Surrounded by a leafy wooded park, the fortification dates back to the 9th century. Walk part of the Kremlin walls to soak up panoramic city views and admire the five-domed 11th-century St. Sophia Cathedral, the oldest church in Russia.

Nearby is the Millennium of Russia monument, a 16-meter-high, 100-tonne sculpture that was erected in 1862. Marvel at the 127 bronze figures depicting notable rulers, statesmen, artists and scholars, including Mother Russia, Catherine the Great and Alexander Nevsky.

Also located within the Kremlin walls is the Novgorod State United Museum, which showcases interesting exhibits from the city’s past. Learn about Russian wood carving, then browse the world’s largest collection of Russian icons and 800-year-old birch-bark manuscripts.

Escape the city’s bustle with a day trip to St. George’s Monastery, which is nestled amongst a picturesque marsh. After admiring the wooden architecture and beautiful frescoes inside, you can wander along the peaceful shores of Lake Ilmen.

Getting around

You can access Veliky Novgorod by flying into Veliky Novgorod Airport, a 30-minute drive from the city center, while the Novgorod-Na-Volhove train station offers connections to Saint Petersburg. You can walk around the centre of town, but will need to use a bus or taxi to venture further.
