About Miyako Islands

Things to do in Miyako Islands

You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to beaches on Miyakojima Island. Maehama Beach is one of Japan’s best with its white sand, while Yoshino Beach’s coral reefs, vibrant fish and sea turtles offer incredible snorkeling. If you’re traveling with the kids, visit Shinjo Beach to enjoy its wide and shallow waters.

If you want to get up close to the island’s underwater treasures without getting wet, visit the Miyakojima Marine Park. Admire the tropical fish in their natural habitat from an underwater observatory, then let the kids feed fish in the touch tank.

Soak up a bird’s-eye view of the island from the Cape Higashi-Hennazaki Lighthouse, which stands atop the cape. You can climb up the 96 steps of the spiral staircase to admire the panoramic views of the peninsula from 25 meters high. Pack a picnic lunch and walk around its well-kept grounds to explore the coast.

Take a break in the Miyakojima Botanical Garden, where scenic walking trails are lined with lush foliage and over 1,600 types of plants, bushes and flowers from Hawaii, Taiwan and Southeast Asia. If you need more pampering, visit the Shigira Ougon Onsen to soak your weary muscles in the traditional hot springs.
