About Mljet

Located off the Pelješac peninsula, Mljet is one of the largest Adriatic islands in Croatia’s Dalmatia region. Its western end is protected as a densely forested national park while picturesque seaside villages dot its coast. Mljet is so attractive that it’s said to have attracted Odysseus, who stayed on the island for seven years.

Things to do in Mljet

After arriving in Sobra, make the short drive east to Prožurska Luka, a picturesque hamlet overlooking a pebbly beach and a sparkling bay. Continue driving to the village of Okuklje where you’ll find several idyllic swimming spots, as well as spectacular coastal views from the surrounding hills.

No visit to Mljet is complete without exploring the hiking trails and saltwater lakes of Mljet National Park, a wild area that encompasses the northwestern-most third of the island. Stretch your legs along the well-marked path that rings Malo Jezero or paddle to the 12th-century monastery in the middle of Veliko Jezero. Kayaks are available for rent at the narrow channel that links the two lakes.

You can learn about Mljet Island’s associations with Odysseus at the Odysseus Cave. The beautiful grotto is where it’s said he met the nymph, Calypso, who nursed him back to health. Easily accessed along a walking trail from Babino Polje, this egg-shaped limestone cave features azure waters and provides a shelter for fishing boats. The surrounding cliffs are a popular spot for diving into the Adriatic Sea.

Getting around Mljet

Regular ferries connect from Dubrovnik and Ston to Mljet's main port of Sobra, from where buses travel around the island. Having your own vehicle is the most convenient way to explore, with both scooters and cars available for rent near the ferry terminal. Dubrovnik Airport has seasonal flights to destinations across Europe.
