Things to do in Znojmo Wine Region
Base yourself in the medieval town of Znojmo. It’s the cultural heart of the Znojmo Wine Region and features cobbled streets lined with handsome stone buildings. Beneath the town is a labyrinth of tunnels and caverns built in the 14th century. Tours take you deep into the subterranean network, which features almost 30 kilometres of tunnels.
From grand estates to charming family-run vineyards, you’ll find producers of all shapes and sizes in the Znojmo Wine Region. Guided tours are a great way to visit multiple vineyards and learn more about the centuries-old winemaking process. One of the most famous vineyards occupies a 12th-century monastery. Try different wines in the cavernous tasting room and admire art at the on-site gallery.
The Bohemian-Moravian Highlands border the Znojmo Wine Region and create a unique microclimate. Lashings of sunshine coupled with stony soils make the region ideal for growing Riesling and Grüner Veltliner. Wine produced by members of the Znojmo VOC must meet strict growing, harvest and production protocols. The Grüner Veltliner is excellent and will tantalise you with a complex palate of pineapple, lemon, apple and vanilla. Riesling, locally known as Ryzlink Rýnský, is fruity yet delicate with a rich golden-yellow hue.
Getting around Znojmo Wine Region
Rental cars offer the freedom to explore the Znojmo Wine Region at your own pace, while tours are a good option if you don’t have a car. The town of Znojmo is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot. Znojmo Wine Region is a three-hour drive from Prague.
