About Middle Atlas

Nestled between Fes and Marrakech, the Middle Atlas is a breathtaking mountain range that lures adventurous travellers in with its forested slopes, inviting townships and the famous waterfalls of Cascades Ouzoud. The elevation of Middle Atlas means it is very cool during summer and receives snow in winter. You can even ski at the resort town of Ifrane.

While exploring the Middle Atlas, visit the market town of Midelt, where you can browse local goods at a bustling souk on Sundays. Just outside of town is the Kasbah Meriem weaving school and a natural arena called Cirque de Jaffar that’s only accessible via 4WD.

The northern part of the Middle Atlas has multiple Berber towns where you can organise mountain treks, while the southern part has the Cascades d'Ouzoud and white-water rafting. You can also visit the M'Goun Geopark in the south to see Mesozoic-age archaeological exhibits, including dinosaur footprints and natural pyramids.

Getting there

The Middle Atlas is about 2.5 hours’ drive from Fes or between five and eight hours from Marrakech depending on where you want to arrive. You can reach Morocco by flying into Fes Sais International Airport or Marrakesh Menara Airport, which both have rental car companies.
