One of Greece’s 13 regions, Thessaly extends from the Aegean Sea in the east to Mount Koziakas in the west while Macedonia lies to its north. It is referenced in Homer’s Odyssey as “Aeolia” and spent almost 500 years under Ottoman rule. In 1881, Thessaly became part of the modern nation of Greece.

Discover the ancient sites of Larissa. With a history dating back 8,000 years, Larissa serves as the lively capital of Thessaly. Marvel at its 3rd-century BC Hellenistic theatre and the whitewashed monument dedicated to Hippocrates before exploring the ruined Ottoman textile market of Bezesteni. Many of the city’s most treasured archaeological findings are exhibited at the Diachronic Museum.
Escape to the Sporades. Comprising four main islands, the Sporades is a sun-drenched archipelago off the east coast of Thessaly. You can explore the picturesque village of Skiathos or relax on the blissful beaches of Skopelos, which provide a setting for snorkelling, diving and water sports. Come face-to-face with seals in the marine park of Alonissos before soaking up the views from the hilltop capital of Skyros.
Hike to the summit of Mount Ossa. Rising to 1,978 metres in height, Mount Ossa is a pyramidal-shaped peak with spectacular views across Thessaly. In Greek mythology, it is said that the Aloads piled Mount Pelion on top of Mount Ossa in their attempt to scale Mount Olympus and reach heaven. Follow the steep trail that leads up Mount Ossa’s southwestern side to look out across the Plain of Thessaly and the Aegean Sea, with Mount Olympus rising to the north.
Getting around Thessaly
Nea Anchialos National Airport is the main aviation gateway to Thessaly and has seasonal flights to destinations across Europe. Trains connect to major towns and cities throughout the region while buses serve smaller destinations. Renting a car is the most convenient way of getting around Thessaly.
