Where to stay in Buyeo

About Buyeo

Serving as an ancient capital during the Baekje Dynasty, Buyeo is a historic city built atop the 6th-century Sabi Fortress. It’s renowned for its peaceful atmosphere and scenic nature trails, as well as being home to a fascinating collection of Buddhist temples, fortresses and sculptural parks.

Things to do

Learn about the history of the Baekje Dynasty at the Jeongnimsa Temple and Museum, which once served as a symbolic meeting place for royalty and politicians. Admire the 1,500-year-old five-storey pagoda and the temple’s seated stone Buddha, where you can find depictions of Sabi-era life in the museum’s relief panels.

Visit the Buyeo National Museum to see exhibits on archaeological findings from the Sabi era through to the Baekje Dynasty. It showcases national treasures, such as the Gilt-bronze Incense Burner of Baekje and the immense Stone Basin of Buyeo that commands the main entrance hall.

Visit the ancient mountain fortress of Busosanseong, which comprises ornate pavilions, soldier’s huts and Buddhist temples. Stroll along the covered pathways that lead throughout the site and drink the anti-ageing spring waters of the Goransa Temple.

Spend an afternoon exploring the picturesque Seodong Park, where the 68 sculptures dotted along its landscape are created by some of South Korea’s best-known artists. The centrepiece of the park is Gungnamji Pond, which features a flower-adorned bridge and observatory.

Getting around

Buyeo is two hours’ drive south of Seoul, with regular buses making the journey. The town is small enough to explore on foot, with most attractions a short stroll from the main bus terminal.
