About Cumbria

Centred around the Lake District National Park, Cumbria is a largely rural county in the far north-west of England along the border with Scotland. It encompasses part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, as well as Carlisle Castle and the UNESCO-listed Hadrian’s Wall.

Things to do in Cumbria

With its breathtaking natural landscapes, charming market towns and tumultuous history, Cumbria is one of England’s most underrated regions.

Discover Carlisle’s rich history. The only city in Cumbria, Carlisle was originally established as a Roman settlement at the junction of the Eden, Caldew and Petteril rivers. Near the ruins of Hadrian’s Wall stands Carlisle Castle, a 900-year-old fortification that’s been the location of several significant historical events and now houses Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life.

Explore the Lake District’s market towns. Clustered with art galleries and traditional pubs, the market towns of Kendal, Keswick and Ambleside are an ideal base for exploring the Lake District National Park. Visit the historic Windermere Hotel and venture into the World of Beatrix Potter at Bowness-on-Windermere before riding the steam-hauled railway from Lakeside.

Climb Scafell Pike. Rising to 978 metres, Scafell Pike is the highest point in England and offers sweeping views across Cumbria. You can hike the relatively easy route that leads from Wasdale via the Brown Tongue or tackle the longer Corridor Route that navigates the high-level shelf below Scafell Pike’s summit dome.

Wander the ruins of Furness Abbey. Once one of the richest Cistercian monasteries in England, Furness Abbey is now a collection of red sandstone ruins along the peaceful banks of the Mill Beck. Start your journey at the visitor’s centre to learn about the abbey’s fascinating past before wandering between its tower-topped church, cloisters and dormitory.

Getting around Cumbria

Newcastle International Airport is just over an hour’s drive from Carlisle, with trains connecting to towns and villages throughout Cumbria. Buses are also available for getting around the county and the Lake District National Park, although having your own vehicle gives you greater freedom to explore.
