Things to do in Engerdal

Femundsmarka National Park straddles the Swedish border and protects one of the largest wilderness areas in Scandinavia. Trails wind through the park and take you through dense pine forests and windswept valleys and barren boulder fields. Stay the night in a traditional mountain hut with a wood-fired stove. Switch things up in Gutulia National Park, one of the smallest parks in Norway. Paddle on the lake and hike through hundred-year-old groves of spruce, pine and birch trees.

Cast a line in one of the 900+ lakes surrounding Engerdal. From enormous lakes like Femunden to hidden gems, the options are endless. They’re well-stocked with multiple species, including pike, perch, trout, char and grayling. The action doesn’t stop in the winter when activities like ice fishing and cross-country skiing will get you outdoors.

Engerdal is one of the best places in Innlandet county to connect with indigenous Sami people. Visit the open-air Blokkodden Villmarksmuseum to learn more about their unique culture and traditions, including reindeer husbandry and falcon hunting.

Set sail on M/S Femund II, a wooden steamship built in the 1880s. It’s a great way to see the lake and visit the small villages dotted along the shoreline. Order a fresh-baked waffle from the café and head up to the top deck to enjoy the views.

Getting around Engerdal

Engerdal is compact and easy to get around on foot, though you’ll need a car to visit surrounding sights and attractions at your own pace. Ferries connect towns and villages set on Femunden. Engerdal is a 3.5-hour drive from Oslo and three hours from Oslo Airport.
