About Gjirokastër

Gjirokaster is an ancient hillside town and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Well-preserved Ottoman architecture and breathtaking mountain landscapes make it one of the most enchanting destinations in Albania. Get lost in the fairytale Old Town, explore the centuries-old castle and visit natural wonders like the Blue Eye Spring.

Things to do in Gjirokastër

Wander through the streets of the Old Town and admire beautifully preserved Ottoman-era houses with stone walls and slate roofs. You’ll soon appreciate why Gjirokaster is known as the “City of Stone”. Getting lost in the maze of narrow streets paved with limestone blocks is part of the fun. You’ll find the best shopping in the Bazaar, a colourful district filled with souvenir stores and artisanal workshops.

Gjirokaster Castle soars over the town and commands panoramic views over the surrounding mountains and countryside. It’s one of the most impressive strongholds in the Balkans and has watched over the town for centuries. Explore the ruins of the ancient castle and visit the fascinating Gjirokaster Museum, which features exhibits on the town’s tumultuous past.

Visit Blue Eye Spring, a natural wonder located in a nearby village. Crystalline water bubbles up from an underground spring and flows into a deep pool surrounded by lush greenery. Trails wind through the surrounding forests and showcase the stunning natural landscapes.

Dine at local eateries and savour traditional Albanian dishes like “tave kosi” lamb baked in yoghurt, “qifqi” rice balls seasoned with herbs and “moussaka” eggplant casserole. Some of the oldest restaurants in Gjirokaster have been operating for more than a century.
