Where to stay in Grenaa

About Grenaa

Located on the east coast of the Jutland peninsula, Grenaa is a historic market town that has flourished as a summer holiday destination. It’s home to a globally themed amusement park and an aquarium showcasing marine life from the surrounding waters, as well as a stunning stretch of coastline ideal for hiking and swimming.

Things to do

Overlooking the waterfront of Grenaa is the Kattegatcentret, an aquarium specialising in Nordic saltwater species. You can dive amidst marine life from the Kattegat strait in the Oceanariet or step through the shark tunnel to be surrounded by tiger sharks, whitetip reef sharks and nurse sharks. Other highlights of the Kattegatcentret include its native herring exhibit and a display featuring both grey and harbour seals.

If you’re visiting in the summer months, you can spend your days relaxing on Grenaa Beach, which was nominated as one of the best beaches in the country by the Danish Tourist Board. Grenaa also marks the start of several spectacular coastal walks, with the stretch along the dramatic limestone cliffs of Sangstrup particularly impressive.

Travelling with kids? Don’t miss a visit to Djurs Sommerland, a family-friendly amusement park divided into eight themed areas that include Afrikaland, Mexicoland and Vikingeland. You can reach speeds of up to 90 kilometres an hour on the Piraten roller coaster or ride the Colorado River log flume before taking advantage of the water bikes and canoes on the Sommerland lake.

Getting around

Grenaa is around 25 minutes’ drive from Aarhus Airport, which has seasonal flights to destinations across Europe, and regular trains connect from central Aarhus to the Grenaa railway station. Ferries travel between Grenaa and Halmstad in Sweden, as well as to the Danish island of Anholt. Buses are the main means of getting around Grenaa.
