Pick up a brochure from the visitor centre and embark on a self-guided walking tour of Greytown's historic district. Many of its Victorian buildings, including the 19th-century Greytown Public Library, are fronted by informative plaques that detail each site’s history. Others house cafes, restaurants, galleries and boutiques.
Located on the site of an old stop yard, the Cobblestones Museum features a handful of period buildings, including a school, church, woolshed, blacksmiths and fire station. You can wander around the flower-filled gardens and enjoy a picnic on the grass.
The centuries-old Papawai Marae is one of New Zealand's most important Maori meeting grounds. Stroll around the ancient buildings and admire the carved figures of Maori ancestors. Around 10 kilometres out of town, the Stonehenge Aotearoa is a life-size replica of England's iconic prehistoric monument. Enjoy a pint at the Greytown Hotel, one of New Zealand's oldest pubs. It's been welcoming visitors since 1863 and serves hearty meals accompanied by an impressive tap list. Saluté champions an upmarket aesthetic and serves truffle duck risotto and red wine braised beef cheeks.
Getting around Greytown
Greytown is easy to explore on foot, especially around the historic district. A rental car is the best way to get around the Wairarapa Region. Wellington is 80 kilometres away and a 1.5-hour journey using public transport.
