About Izumi

A city built on the junction of both river and sea, Izumi’s claim to fame is the 10,000 cranes that descend here each year from Siberia in winter. Their arrival in Izumi is quite a spectacle, keenly awaited by locals and birding enthusiasts alike.

Things to do in Izumi

Birdwatchers should start at the Izumi City Crane Centre, the best place to see the migrating cranes. The centre’s observation deck overlooks the roosting grounds of many local birds, perfect for watching these majestic creatures up close. You can learn about their habits and extraordinary flight path in the on-site museum, which also offers binoculars to rent.

Continuing with the crane theme, Hakozaki Hachiman Shrine commemorates a prince who fell in love with a crane. The shrine is located in a picturesque setting, and its temple bell is said to be one of the largest and heaviest in the world.

It is said that plenty of samurais lived in Izumi, with several of their former homes now open to the public where you can go on a guided tour to learn about the samurai way of life. Meander through the simple wooden dwellings, where you’ll find little furniture, in keeping with traditional Japanese decor.

Above Izumi are the Uwaba-kogen Highlands, one of the most popular day trip destinations for locals. People come here to hike and picnic amongst the fresh, green landscapes and to buy ice cream made from the milk of the highland cows.
