About Jefferson City

Overlooking the Missouri River, Jefferson City lies on the northern edge of the Ozark Plateau in the heart of Missouri. It serves as the state capital and is named after the former President of the United States, Thomas Jefferson, whose statue dominates the monumental Missouri State Capitol.

Things to do in Jefferson City

Magnificent views across the Missouri River can be enjoyed from the pedestrian walkway of the Jefferson City Bridge, which comprises two through arch truss bridges that opened in 1955 and 1991. Alternatively, you can stroll along the leafy walking trails of Ellis-Porter Riverside Park, which is home to a swimming pool, recreational courts and an amphitheatre.

Don’t miss the Missouri State Capitol, which was completed in 1917 on a design by Tracy and Swartwout. It is dominated by a Baroque-style dome that rises to 73 metres in height and is topped by a statue of Ceres. Admire the mural paintings and bronze busts on display in the State Museum or coincide your visit with a General Assembly session.

Nearby is the Missouri State Penitentiary, which served as a prison from 1836 to 2004. It is now accessible to the public on guided tours, which offer a fascinating insight into the living conditions and some of the most notorious inmates to have done time here. Across the road is the Missouri State Penitentiary Museum, where you’ll find artefacts from the prison and a replica cell.

Jefferson City is just over two hours’ drive from St. Louis and St. Louis Lambert International Airport, which has flights to destinations across North America and Europe.
