Punjabi culture is highlighted in Ludhiana, with an excellent display of agricultural heritage showcased inside the Rural Museum. Collections include artefacts, rare coins and musical instruments from ancient villages. The Maharaja Ranjit Singh War Museum features India’s military history in 12 galleries, with a narrated light and sound show every evening.
Extravagant temples pay homage to Hindu gods and goddesses, such as Lord Shiva, immortalised at Shivala Sangliwala Temple/Mandir. Visitors offer holy water from the River Ganges in hopes of visions of Shiva. Followers of Sikhism make their way to the holy sanctuary of Rara Sahib Gurudwara for meditation and enlightenment.
Shopping in Ludhiana swings between old-world bazaars and international megaplexes, such as Ansal Plaza Shopping Mall. Pick up finely crafted textiles and woollen goods at Mochpura Bazar, then try some local Punjabi food from local stalls. Visit the wholesalers and traders at Gur Mandi market for discounted home furnishings, gold jewellery and electronics.
Families can visit Hardy’s World Amusement Park to enjoy arcade-style rides, water sports, ice skating and one of the largest branches of India’s Indoor Snow City. A short drive outside the city is Tiger Safari Zoo, where you can take a safari to spot tigers, peacocks, black bucks and sambar deer.
Getting Around
Sri Guru Dass Jee International Airport offers rental cars for the 150-kilometre drive to Sambhar. After arrival, you can use buses, taxis and auto rickshaws for getting around.
