About Mohill

Translating from Irish as “Soft Ground”, Mohill is nestled in the Rinn Valley in County Leitrim. A monastery was established here by Saint Manachan around 500 AD, with the town growing in its surroundings. A short drive south is the historic Lough Rynn Castle, a lakeside estate renowned for its magnificent gardens.

Things to do in Mohill

One of Mohill’s most popular attractions is the Farnaught Lime Kiln, a 19th-century kiln that ceased operations in the 1950s. Lime kilns once dotted the Irish countryside and were used to create quicklime for breaking down the area’s heavy clay soils. The Farnaught Lime Kiln has been lovingly restored by local craftsmen on the grounds of Lough Rynn Estate, not far from its medieval castle.

On the western edge of Mohill is St. Patrick's Church, which was built by local volunteers in the 1880s. Based on the designs of Canon Donoghoe, it is topped by an impressive square tower envisioned by Thomas Francis Mcnamara. Coincide your visit with a Mass to explore the serene interior, which features beautiful stained glass windows.

Mohill is a popular destination for fishing, with several lakes in the area known for their stocks of bream and pike. Cast a line to see what’s biting in the waters of Lough Rinn and Creenagh Lake or head west to Lough McHugh, with native wildlife and birdlife often spotted along its shores. Corgar Lough can be accessed along the Cavan Leitrim Greenway, which follows the historic route of the Cavan and Leitrim Railway.

Getting around Mohill

Mohill is just under two hours’ drive from Dublin and Dublin Airport, which has flights to destinations across the globe. Buses connect to Mohill and the town is small enough to explore on foot. Renting a car is the most convenient way of getting around the area.
