Where to stay in Najran

About Najran

Hugging the border with Yemen, Najran Province encompasses almost 150,000 square kilometres in the south of Saudi Arabia. It was part of Yemen until 1926 when King Abdulaziz took control and is still occupied by the Yemeni-descended Yam tribe. While being rich in oil, Najran Province also boasts spectacular landscapes, including the scenic valley of Wadi Najran and the rugged Asir Mountains.

Things to do

Whether you’re interested in Saudi Arabia’s architectural, cultural or natural history, Najran Province is a fascinating destination to explore.

Visit the Najran Museum. Occupying a striking building in the city of Najran is the Najran Museum, which details the cultural heritage and natural environment of the province. Its exhibits cover Najran’s history from prehistoric times to the modern-day and the museum regularly hosts cultural programs.

Explore the clay villages of Wadi Najran. Fed by streams from the Sarat Mountains, Wadi Najran is one of the largest valleys on the Arabian Peninsula and is dotted with historic villages constructed using clay. Learn about the unique design of its “doroobs” residences, with the ground floor dedicated to livestock, and marvel at the creativity employed by each of the craftsmen.

See the Najran Valley Dam. One of the province’s most impressive engineering feats is the Najran Valley Dam, an arch dam that was built across Wadi Najran in 1981. It plays an important role in supplying water, controlling floods and recharging groundwater in the region, and offers stunning views across the Asir Mountains.

Photograph the cascades of Waterfall Park. Located within a state park on the city outskirts of Najran is a picturesque cascade, which tumbles over a rocky outcrop. It can be reached via a gently ascending staircase and there are grassy lawns at the base where you can relax with a picnic lunch.

Getting around

Najran Regional Airport is the main aviation gateway to Najran Province and has regular flights to Damman, Jeddah and Riyadh. Hiring a car or driver is the most convenient way of getting around the province.
