Where to stay in Newry

About Newry

Set between the Mourne Mountains and the Ring of Gullion, Newry is known as the "Gateway to the North", where you can explore the fairy tale-esque landscapes of Northern Ireland. The border city boasts trendy restaurants, fantastic shopping and a string of historic attractions.

Things to do

The Newry & Mourne Museum showcases the city's storied past. It's housed in Bagenal's Castle, Newry's oldest surviving building. Inside you'll find exhibits on Irish folklore, ancient archaeological finds and the Newry Canal.

Located just outside the city centre, Derrymore House is a thatched cottage that was built in 1776 and has witnessed a host of milestone moments, including the drafting of the Act of Union back in 1800. In addition to touring the house, you can wander around the beautifully landscaped English garden.

Newry is considered one of Ireland's top shopping destinations, home to flagship malls and boutique retailers. High-street shoppers will love The Quays, a family-friendly shopping centre complete with a food court and cinema complex.

Set between the River Shimna and the Mourne Mountains, Tollymore Forest Park showcases the natural beauty of Northern Ireland. As well as exploring scenic hiking trails, you can peer into 18th-century Clanbrassil Barn, visit hidden grottoes and stroll down an avenue of ancient Deodar cedar trees. “Game of Thrones” fans will recognise it as a filming location for the eerie Haunted Forest scenes.

Getting around

Newry is easily explored on foot and is serviced by a network of local buses and taxis. You'll need a car to tour County Armagh and County Down. The city is around 55 kilometres from Belfast and 100 kilometres from Dublin.
