About Nikopol

Translating as the “City of Victory”, Nikopol lies on the north bank of the Dnieper River in Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. It’s an important industrial and transportation hub for the region and is home to an informative history museum. In addition to its leafy parks, Nikopol features a picturesque beach where you can swim in the summer months.

Things to do

Learn about the people and industries that have shaped the region at the Nikopol Museum, which is fronted by several contemporary sculptures. Its exhibits include religious icons and a centuries-old wooden oxen cart, as well as artefacts from the time of the Cossacks. Hear about life in Nikopol during the Great Patriotic War and the legacy of the legendary historian and archaeologist Borys Mozolevsky.

If you’re visiting in the summer months, you can enjoy a dip from the sands of Misʹkyy Plyazh, which hugs the north bank of the Dnieper River. There are changing rooms and toilets backing the beach and kayaks are available for rent. A short stroll west is Nikopol City Beach where you’ll find shaded cabanas and a volleyball court.

Directly across the NeNastin Gulf from Nikopol are the Lord’s Cliffs, which offer magnificent views across the Dnieper River. They rise around 30 metres near the village of Kapulivka, which is where Fedir Lutay established the Chortomlyk Sich in 1652. Learn about its significance in Cossack history and how Ivan Sirko defeated a 60,000-strong Ottoman-Tatar army in 1675.

Getting around

Nikopol is around 1.5 hours’ drive from Zaporizhzhia and two hours from Zaporizhzhia International Airport, which has flights to destinations across Europe. Trains connect from cities across Ukraine to the Nikopol railway station while buses travel throughout the city. Having your own vehicle is the most convenient way of exploring the surrounding region.
