Where to stay in Plauen

About Plauen

Plauen is an atmospheric city filled with tree-lined streets and historic architecture. The city is famous for its beautiful lace and houses several museums dedicated to the artform, as well as boutiques selling curtains, tablecloths, handkerchiefs and other lacework. A lively cultural scene and excellent local restaurants make Plauen a fantastic base for exploring Saxony.

Things to do

The tourist office occupies the former town hall and is a fantastic place to find information on local tours and attractions. Don’t miss Bärensteinturm, a soaring tower where you can enjoy sweeping views over the city. The colourful Galerie E.O. Plauen celebrates the life and legacy of famous cartoonist Erich Ohser, who created the iconic “Father and Son” comic strips.

Famous across Europe, Plauen Lace is known for its delicate patterns and incredible attention to detail. The Plauen Lace Museum charts the history of lace, which has been made in the city for more than 100 years. At the excellent Schaustickerei Museum you can watch highly skilled lacemakers at work. Some artisans still use antique lace-making machines.

From opera and ballet to jazz and classical music, Plauen is home to several excellent performing arts venues. Enjoy a night of ballet at the Neoclassical Vogtlandtheater or head to a rock concert at ultra-modern Festhalle. In summer, open-air Parktheater hosts concerts under the stars.

The town centre is brimming with cafes and bistros serving traditional Saxon cuisine. Save your appetite for “sachsischer sauerbraten” roast meat and “leberwurst” liver sausages with sauerkraut. Wash down your meal with a glass of German lager.

Getting around

Plauen is located in the south-west of Saxony, a 1.5-hour drive from Dresden. The city is pedestrian-friendly and the main train station is a 15-minute walk from the city centre. Dresden Airport is a 1.5-hour drive away.
