About Ratnagiri

Part of India's Konkan Coast, famous for its Alphonso mangoes, Ratnagiri is a laid-back town fringed by golden sand, swaying palms and rugged sea cliffs. Spend your time basking on Arabian Sea beaches, exploring ancient forts and soaking up the local fishing culture.

Things to do in Ratnagiri

Set on the Arabian Sea, Thibaw Palace served as a sanctuary for the last Burmese king who was exiled by the British in 1886. Wander around the three-storey building, which is adorned with beautiful wooden windows and intricate carvings.

Stretch your legs on the trail to Purnagad Fort, which starts in a small fishing village and winds up to the ruins of an ancient stronghold. Along the way you can spot rare birds like the Indian hornbill. From the top, soak up dazzling views over the Arabian Sea.

Head south and you'll hit Ganeshgule Beach, a crescent-shaped stretch of sand fringed by lush coconut palms and casuarina trees. You can relax on the beach or cool off in the crystal-clear water. Ganpatipule Beach is another favourite, boasting swaying hammocks strung between coconut palms.

The Konkan Coast is famous for its juicy Alphonso mangoes. Don't leave without enjoying an ultra-creamy mango lassi at one of Ratnagiri's local restaurants. Seafood is also popular, with specialties including coconut fish curry and fried Bombay duck, also known as lizardfish.

Getting around Ratnagiri

Ratnagiri is easy to get around on foot. Local buses run to nearby towns, villages and beaches, while taxis and auto rickshaws are also available. Renting a car is a popular way to explore the Konkan Coast.
