About San Cristóbal de las Casas

Also known as Tzotzil, San Cristobal de las Casas is a colourful Mexican town perched high in the Chiapas highlands. Beyond its dramatic setting among the pine forests, San Cristobal is known for its beautifully-preserved colonial architecture, cobblestone streets and bustling markets. The street scene is laid-back and artistic, with a smorgasbord of cafes, bars and restaurants spilling out onto the pavement.

Things to do

Painted in a vibrant shade of yellow, the Baroque-style San Cristobal Cathedral is an impossible landmark to miss. It watches over the Parque Central, offering a place to slow down and chat with friendly locals or simply enjoy a spot of people watching.

San Cristobal de las Casas is surrounded by dozens of traditional Tzotzil and Tzeltal villages where you can discover ancient Mexican culture. Located just out of town, the indigenous village of San Juan Chamula is famous for its ancient whitewashed church filled with colourful candles and resin incense.

Housed in the former Santo Domingo de Guzmán convent, the Los Altos Museum showcases a fascinating collection of historical and textile exhibits. Just outside is a local market where you can pick up handicrafts, weavings and other unique souvenirs.

San Cristobal is home to some great museums, including quirky instalments such as the Kakaw Museum of Cocoa and Chocolate. The Mesoamerican Jade Museum is another highlight, showcasing artefacts, jewellery and other treasures.

Getting around

Not only is San Cristobal scenic, but it’s also incredibly walkable. This means the best way to get around is on foot, with most major attractions just a few minutes apart. Local taxis can take you out of town to places like San Juan Chamula and Zinacantán.
