About Slagelse

From a fierce Viking heritage to a world-class military museum, Slagelse is a fascinating corner of Denmark. Explore a 1,000-year-old fortress built by a Nordic king and admire one of the most beautiful medieval churches in Scandinavia. Head to the coast to relax on white-sand beaches and see the impressive Great Belt Bridge.

Things to do in Slagelse

See heavily armoured tanks, trucks and helicopters at Panzermuseum East. The museum showcases one of the largest collections of privately owned military vehicles in Scandinavia, including many Cold War veterans. Some vehicles dot the grounds and others are housed in enormous hangers.

Learn about the legacy of Nordic warriors at the Trelleborg Museum of the Viking Age. The open-air museum protects an enormous circle-shaped fortress built in 900 AD. Walk around the remains of the fortress and retrace the footsteps of legendary warrior, King Harald “Bluetooth” Gormsson. Costumed actors bring the museum to life in the summer and invite you to join family-friendly activities and workshops.

Enjoy bucket-and-spade fun on Stillinge Strand, a picturesque beach backed by a chocolate-box village. Roll out your towel on the sugar-white sand and enjoy beautiful views across the bay. The beach is set on the Great Belt, a sheltered strait that divides the islands of Zealand and Funen. This keeps the water calm and is great for swimming. Walk into the village to find cafes, ice cream parlours and cosy restaurants.

Visit the neighbouring town of Soro and admire one of the best-preserved medieval churches in Denmark. The town is set on a picturesque lake framed by towering oak trees. Enjoy lunch at a lakeside cafe and stop by the Sorø Art Museum to see works by prominent Danish artists.
