Where to stay in Wando

About Wando

Scattering off the south coast of Korea, Wando is an archipelago that includes the popular getaway destination of Cheongsando Island. It’s home to the former headquarters of the 9th-century military leader Jang Bogo and boasts the scenic coastal landscapes of Dadohaehaesang National Park.

Things to do

Cheongsando is a particularly popular destination as it was used as a setting in the drama series “Spring Waltz”. Witness the island ignited in wildflowers during the spring months or ride the ferry west to beautiful Bogildo, a pine-blanketed island renowned for its beaches.

Watch the sun slowly set over the Sea of Japan from Cheongsan Jiri Beach, which is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Wando. It boasts clear, shallow waters and fine white sands, as well as emerald pine trees that offer plenty of shade.

Wander the remains of Cheonghaejin, the castle and military base that was established by Jang Bogo to control maritime routes through the surrounding seas. At low tide you can walk to this Jangdo Island historical site from the main island of Wando, with the remains of a rammed earth castle and the Beobhwa-sa temple visible today.

The main island of Wando is connected by bridge to the mainland and serves as the launching point for ferries to Jejudo. Wander the lively fishing harbour and dine at one of the local seafood restaurants while soaking up the panoramic views of the picturesque offshore islands.

Getting around

Wando is located around three hours from Gwangju International Airport, with a combination of buses and trains available. Roads connect the islands of Wando and Sinjido, while boats depart from Wando’s ferry terminal to the archipelago’s other islands and Jejudo.
