Where to stay in Xianyang

About Xianyang

Set predominantly on the Weihe River, Xianyang was once the capital city of the Qin dynasty and captures its storied past with mausoleums, museums, tombs, grottoes and temples. The centre of the city is blessed with waterfront parks and a wealth of Chinese restaurants, while the greater region is a playground for nature and history lovers.

Things to do

Immerse yourself in Xianyang’s rich history at Maoling, a mausoleum of Emperor Wu of Han, the largest of all the tombs built during the Han dynasty. It took over 50 years to complete and you can visit to admire its striking tower and the surrounding tombs, which belong to deceased members of Emperor Wu’s court.

If you’re spending time in the centre of the city, head to Weibin Park, which hugs the Weihe River. Get a fantastic view of the river from Tongyi Square before strolling the walking paths through the park. When you get hungry, duck into one of the nearby eateries for sumptuous Chinese fare, such as the Maike Yeyede Shop bakery or Ronghe Restaurant.

Get out and explore the greater area of Xianyang to discover fascinating historical sites, such as the Buddhist temple at the Dafosi Grottoes or the ancient artefacts at Hanyangling Museum. Nature lovers shouldn’t miss visiting Shimen Mountain Forest Park, which features amazing cherry blossom trees during spring.

Just across the river, you can visit the famed sights of Xi’an, such as the incredible Terracotta Army, a collection of terracotta sculptures depicting the armies of the first Emperor of China. You can also cycle along the walls of the ancient Fortifications of Xi'an.

Getting around

Xianyang is best reached by flying into Xi'an Xianyang International Airport a 30-minute drive away, or by catching a high-speed train to Xianyang Train Station. The city can be explored on foot or by using buses, while a car is best for venturing further afield.
