About Zarzis

Formerly known as Gergis, Zarzis is a coastal town overlooking the Mediterranean Sea in Tunisia’s north-east. It was of strategic importance to the Phoenicians, Romans and Arabs, and a former bishopric and Catholic titular see. It’s now a popular tourist destination on the doorstep of Djerba island.

Things to do in Zarzis

For a day at the beach, head to Plage de l’Abattoir, where you can swim in the warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea. It stretches from the Port de Zarzis to the Plage de Casino and is backed by a diverse choice of eateries offering international cuisine and authentic Tunisian fare. Further north is Plage Sidi Kbir and the wide sands of Plage de Amira.

Overlooking Plage Sidi Kbir are the soaring minarets and green-tiled dome of Mosquee Sidi Kbir. It’s one of the most impressive mosques in Zarzis and one of the only mosques in Tunisia with twin minarets. Non-Muslims are welcome to admire its arched entrance and ornate exterior throughout the week while devotees should coincide their visit with Friday prayers.

Zarzis serves as a gateway to the island of Djerba, which is renowned for its blissful beaches and culturally rich desert towns. Get your retail fix in the handicraft markets of Houmt Souk, a whitewashed town watched over by a 16th-century fort. Also not to miss is the ancient synagogue of El Ghriba, which was built in the late 19th century and serves Djerba’s vibrant Jewish community.

Getting around Zarzis

Djerba–Zarzis International Airport is a one-hour drive from Zarzis and has seasonal flights to destinations across Europe. Long-distance buses connect from cities throughout Tunisia to Zarzis Station and public buses travel throughout the town. Renting a car is the most convenient way of exploring the island of Djerba.
