About Borno

Forming part of the “Plateau of the Sun”, Borno is a historic town in the Italian state of Lombardy. It lies on the doorstep of Monte Altissimo, a 2,078-metre-high summit traversed by the long-distance Sentiero della Pace. In the winter months, the Borno–Monte Altissimo Ski Area attracts snow enthusiasts from Milan.

Things to do in Borno

Stroll through Borno to admire the Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista, which was constructed in the 18th century on the designs of Pier Antonio Ceti. The interior features magnificent ceiling paintings and an altar crafted by Giacomo Novi. Adjacent to the church is the Oratory of San Antonio with a fresco by Callisto Piazza.

On the western outskirts of town is Parco Avventura Borno, which encompasses a series of rope courses suspended between the trees. It’s particularly popular with kids, who can test their skills on the swinging walkways, Tibetan bridges and rope “vines”. Dotted throughout the forest are 80 different platforms positioned up to 18 metres above the ground, as well as benches where parents can relax with refreshments from the kiosk.

On the other side of Borno is Parco Archeologico Valzel de Undine, which preserves a sacred site where rites and rituals were performed in prehistoric times. Of particular significance is the erratic boulder that was discovered on the banks of a stream in 1953. The archaeological site is located along a road leading to the Santuario dell' Annunciata a Piancogno, a Capuchin convent dating back to the 15th century.

Getting around Borno

Borno is just over an hour’s drive from Bergamo and two hours from Milan. Milan Malpensa Airport is also two hours away and has flights to destinations across the globe. Regular buses connect to Borno and the town is compact enough to explore on foot.
