About Hamelin

Hamelin is an enchanting town set on the famous Fairy-Tale Road. Get lost in the maze-like historic centre, admire beautiful Weser Renaissance architecture and discover the town’s connection to the famed German folklore character, the Pied Piper.

Things to do in Hamelin

Hamelin’s historic town centre is filled with beautiful sandstone and half-timbered buildings. Many date back to the Renaissance period and have been beautifully restored. A labyrinth of alleyways connect Pferdemarkt and Osterstrasse, the two main squares. Venture down the alleys and explore cosy cafes, shops and beer gardens.

Hamelin is famous as the home of the Pied Piper. According to local legend, the Pied Piper was commissioned to rid the town of rats by playing a magic flute. As you walk around Hamelin, you’ll see plenty of nods to the Pied Piper, including cobblestones painted with tiny rats.

Learn about art, culture and folklore at Museum Hameln. The museum occupies two of the most beautiful Weser Renaissance buildings in town and features interactive exhibits on local history. Don’t miss the fun-filled hourly shows at the Pied Piper Theatre.

Watch the adorable “glockenspiel” percussion clock chime every morning at 9.35 am and 11.35 am. In the afternoon, you can watch the Pied Piper carousel come to life. Both attractions are mounted on the Hochzeitshaus, a handsome historic building completed in the 17th century.

Step back in time at Schloss Hämelschenburg, a magnificent royal castle set by the Emmer River. The castle was built in the extravagant Italianate Weser Renaissance style. Tours take you behind the scenes and into rooms filled with Renaissance antiques and oil paintings. Rent a bike and cycle along the Weser Cycle Route to access the castle.
