About Horten

Horten is a historic port town with a fascinating Viking heritage. Set on the banks of Oslofjord, it’s known for historic architecture and flower-filled gardens. Visit excellent local history museums and step back in time at one of Norway’s biggest ancient burial grounds.

Things to do

The town centre is built around a picturesque harbour surrounded by colourful wooden houses. You’re within walking distance of several museums, including the Royal Norwegian Navy Museum where you can peer inside a submarine and climb aboard KNM Narvik, a decommissioned warship.

Borre Mounds is one of the largest Viking burial grounds in Scandinavia. Strolling around the park, you’ll pass by dozens of the grass-covered burial mounds, some more than 1,000 years old. The Midgard Viking Centre features fascinating exhibitions on artefacts found at local archaeological sites.

The nearby town of Åsgårdstrand has a rich artistic heritage. Famous Norwegian artist Edvard Munch painted some of his most iconic works here and his former home has been reimagined as a local history museum. Stroll around the picturesque harbour, browse boutique galleries and enjoy lunch at an al fresco café. The nearby villages of Borre, Skoppum, and Nykirke are also worth a visit.

Scenic hiking and cycling trails skirt the coastline and take you to sandy beaches, rocky bays and through lush coastal forests. Borrevannet Lake is a great place to swim, sunbathe and enjoy a picnic. Cast a line for the chance to reel in pike and perch.

Getting around

Horten is a 25-minute drive from Tønsberg and 1.5 hours from Oslo. The town is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot. Trains run between Oslo and Skoppum in around one hour. From here, it’s a 10-minute drive to Horten. Local buses run between Oslo and Horten in around two hours, while Sandefjord Airport Torp is a 30-minute drive away. Ferries run between Moss and Horten in 30 minutes.
