Meteora is studded with spectacular Byzantine monasteries perched on towering rock pillars and boulders. The UNESCO World Heritage monasteries are a feat of medieval engineering and seem to defy gravity.
Moni Agias Triados is one of the most beautiful monasteries, with access via a meandering footpath and staircase cut into the cliffside. Take in the magnificent views and admire the colourful frescoes in the tiny church. You may recognise the monastery from the hit James Bond film, “For Your Eyes Only”.
To access Moni Agias Varvaras Rousanou, you’ll cross a teetering wooden bridge. Light streams into the chapel through beautiful stained glass windows. Stock up on honey, jam and other treats being sold by local nuns.
In addition to fascinating history buffs, the Meteora region is a rewarding destination for outdoor pursuits. Scenic hiking trails wind through the landscape and you can enjoy world-class cycling and rock climbing.
Getting there
The nearby town of Kalambaka and the village of Kastraki are both good bases to visit Meteora. Trains run between Kalambaka and Athens in around five hours. Parking is limited near the monasteries, and they’re best explored on foot or by bus. Local tour operators are an easy way to visit the monasteries.
