About Middelfart

Overlooking the narrowest part of the Little Belt Strait, Middelfart is a harbour-side town between Odense and Kolding. It was once an important fishing and porpoise whaling hub before an iron foundry was established in the 19th century. When the Old Little Belt Bridge was completed in 1935, Middelfart flourished as a stopover between Jutland and Funen.

Things to do in Middelfart

Dating back to the 14th century is the Middelfart Church, a monumental brick landmark home to a beautifully carved altarpiece from 1650. It’s located directly opposite the Middelfart Museum, which tells the story of the town’s development. Don’t miss the newly restored Henner Friisers Hus, a half-timbered residence that houses exhibits about Middelfart’s industrial past.

A short walk from the centre of Middelfart is the CLAY Keramikmuseum Danmark, which boasts one of Europe’s most impressive collections of ceramics. It houses more than 50,000 pieces of porcelain, stoneware and faience donated by Royal Copenhagen, much of which was manufactured at Den Kongelige Porcelainsfabrik, Bing & Grøndahl and Aluminia. Take the time to explore the museum store, which is well-stocked with unique ceramics, arts and crafts.

For elevated views across Middelfart, join the team at Bridgewalking Lillebælt for a truly unique experience. While safely harnessed, you’ll be guided up and over the Old Little Belt Bridge, which was constructed between 1925 and 1935. In addition to learning about the history and architecture of the bridge, you can enjoy the thrill of the trains rumbling as they pass beneath you.
