About Morges

Morges is a small, charming city located on Lake Geneva, Switzerland. The city is located 14 kilometres from Lausanne and 50 kilometres from Geneva. Morges is home to a striking medieval castle, fascinating museums and beautiful rolling countryside. The city is also in one of Switzerland’s largest wine producing areas, the La Côte region.

A major attraction of Morges is Château de Morges, also known as Morges Castle, and its four museums. The castle dates back to 1286 when it was built by Louis of Savoy as a fortress to protect the city. Dominating the landscape from both land and water, the castle is flanked by four turrets, each displaying a superb example of a Savoy fortress. The interior is home to four museums, the Swiss Museum of Historic Figurines, The cantonal Military Museum, The Museum of Artillery and The Museum of Lake Geneva Region police. Explore a variety of historic artefacts including soldier’s uniforms from Napoleon’s army, artillery and 10,000 miniature figurines. Movie fans may wish to make a pilgrimage to Tolochenaz Cemetery. Tourists visit here by the busload to see the final resting place of iconic actress Audrey Hepburn. She was most famous for her roles in Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Roman Holiday. Another highlight of Morges is Parc de l'Independance nestled between the castle and the river La Morges. It’s the perfect place for a stroll, picnic or to enjoy moments of relaxation. Flower festivals occur throughout the year with tulips, narcissus and hyacinths achieving full bloom, creating a colourful, visual palette for onlookers. Adventurers and rail enthusiasts will relish a trip on the Bière–Apples–Morges Railway. The 1,000 metre gauge railway travels for 30 kilometres linking several charming Swiss towns. Visitors interested in sampling the cuisine of Morges can do so in a variety of exceptional restaurants. Whether it’s a gourmet burger, Asian or Mediterranean cuisine, there is something to suit all tastes and budgets.

Morges is a compact city. The parks, castle and museums can be reached easily on foot within minutes. Buses operate throughout the city, transporting visitors to major areas of interest. Trains, buses, taxis and Uber also link Morges with other interesting towns and cities including Geneva and Lausanne.

Following the construction of Morges Castle in 1286, the area became a market and trading centre due to its location by the water. The city remains an area of great popularity, and it’s castle, historic sites and lakeside location continuing to attract visitors from all over the world.
