Located on the edge of Hoge Veluwe National Park, Otterlo is a picturesque village between Arnhem, Apeldoorn and Amersfoort. It was here that a fierce battle took place between German, British and Canadian soldiers during the liberation of the Netherlands at the end of World War II.
In the heart of Otterlo is the Nederlands Tegelmuseum, which showcases five centuries of tile production and art. Its wall tiles and tableaux date from the Middle Ages to the modern day and include Dutch Renaissance, Baroque and Art Deco styles. Works by Maurits Escher and Karel Appel are also on display.
Located within Hoge Veluwe National Park is the Kröller-Müller Museum, which boasts an impressive collection of paintings by Vincent Van Gogh. It is based on the private collection of Helene Kröller-Müller, with works by Georges Braque, Lucas Cranach and Pablo Picasso also exhibited in its galleries. Outside is one of Europe’s largest sculpture gardens.
Getting there
Otterlo is around 20 minutes’ drive from Arnhem and one hour from Amsterdam. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is an hour away and has flights to destinations across the globe. Buses connect to Otterlo and the village is small enough to explore on foot.
