About Rototuna

Just north of the Hamilton CBD, Rototuna is a great base for exploring New Zealand’s North Island. The family-friendly neighbourhood is set on the Waikato River and is dotted with parks and playgrounds. Relax by the river or head into the city to check out attractions such as Hamilton Gardens and the Waikato Museum.

Things to do in Rototuna

Scenic walking trails skirt the Waikato River and are great for stretching your legs. The shady green belt spans all the way into the CBD and features grassy picnic areas and benches to catch your breath. In the city centre, the trendy Riverbank Lane development boasts hip cafes and restaurants in the city, along with stunning river views.

At just eight kilometres from the Hamilton CBD, Rototuna offers easy access to lively strips like Hood and Victoria streets. Stroll along the thoroughfares to find a collection of lively cafes and restaurants. Housed in the heritage-listed old post office, the ArtsPost Galleries and Shop showcases original paintings, photography, prints, textiles and jewellery from across the Waikato region.

Set over 50 hectares, Hamilton Gardens is an oasis of themed gardens. Strolling around the park, you’ll be transported to England, China, Japan, India and America. Don’t miss the beautiful New Zealand natives on show in the Māori Te Parapara garden.

Featuring contemporary art, science exhibits and Maori artefacts, the Waikato Museum is one of the top cultural attractions on the North Island. Highlights include an impressive Maori war canoe carved more than 200 years ago. Visit after dark to join the museum’s famous bat tour of Hammond Park.

Getting around Rototuna

Rototuna is a pedestrian-friendly neighbourhood that’s easy to get around on foot. The neighbourhood is a 15-minute drive or 30 minutes by bus from the Hamilton CBD. Auckland Airport is a 1.5-hour drive north.
