Where to stay in Sinop

About Sinop

Draped over a rocky peninsula, Sinop is a Black Sea port town with a yacht-studded harbour and flower-filled streets. Spend your days gazing up at the ancient city walls, devouring freshly caught seafood and relaxing at waterfront cafes.

Things to do

The Sinop Fortress has been guarding the city since 72 BC. While the original walls have long since crumbled, the town is still encircled by barracks raised by the Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks and Ottomans. You'll get the best views from the watchtower that stands over the harbour.

The historic Pervane Medresesi school is fronted by an elegant marble facade and bubbling central fountain. Today it houses a sun-dappled cafe and a cluster or artisan stores. Browse the offerings at Yoresel El Sanatları Satis Magazasi to find a collection of hand-embroidered linen, Sinop's signature export.

A former prison, Tarihi Sinop Cezaevi looms over the city. It was built in 1887 and served as one of Turkey's most notorious jails. Today you can peer into cells, wander down the empty corridors and stroll around the exercise yards.

Sinop serves up some of Turkey's best seafood. Coveted as one of the Black Sea's best seafood restaurants, Okyanus Balik Evi is run by a family of local fishmongers. On a sunny day there's nothing better than snagging a table on the rooftop terrace and enjoying a smorgasbord of freshly caught fish, meze and raki.

Getting around

Sinop is easy to get around on foot, with all major sights and attractions within walking distance. Most visitors arrive by bus from nearby cities like Trabzon and Ankara.
