About Wörgl

Located at the junction of the Inn and Brixentaler Ache rivers, Wörgl is a small but lively city near Austria’s border with Germany. It is on the doorstep of a centuries-old castle where U.S. Army troops, Austrian Resistance fighters and French political prisoners battled against a Waffen-SS division in 1945.

Things to do in Wörgl

Dominating the cityscape is the Pfarrkirche Wörgl, an elegant Baroque church that was built around an existing Gothic structure. Step inside to experience the serenity of its whitewashed interior, which features beautiful stained glass windows and an organ built in 1968 by the Pirchner company. Nearby is the Friedhof Wörgl with its high-steepled chapel.

A short drive from Wörgl is Itter Castle, a 19th-century fortification that rises atop a 666-metre-high grassy hill at the entrance to the Brixental Valley. A fortress has existed on the site since at least the 13th century, with the present building constructed from 1878. During World War II, it was transformed into a Nazi prison and was the site of a famous battle.
