About Zapopan

Forming part of the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area, Zapopan is a lively city with one of the largest populations in Jalisco. It has long been a pilgrimage destination due to an image of the Virgin Mary, who is said to have performed several miracles. Zapopan was once an important cultivator of corn and nicknamed “Villa Maicera”.

Things to do in Zapopan

Dominating the city centre is the twin-towered Basilica of Zapopan, which houses the highly revered Virgin of Zapopan. It was established in the 17th century with a Spanish Baroque facade and a majestic altar carved from Carrara marble. Admire the religious paintings and statues that decorate the ornate interior before learning about the significance of the Virgin of Zapopan at the adjacent museum.

Also located next to the Basilica of Zapopan is the Huichol Wixarika Museum, which showcases the art and culture of the Huichol, Tepehuan and Cora people. As you browse the artefacts, beadwork and textiles on display, learn about their unique beliefs and traditions. On the other side of the Plaza de las Americas is the Zapopan Art Museum, which showcases works by contemporary Mexican artists.

Travelling with kids? Don’t miss Trompo Magico, an interactive museum where they can role-play, learn about the human body and discover the importance of our planet’s biodiversity. In the “Scribble” exhibit, there is the opportunity to paint and draw, join a Brazilian drum circle or go behind the scenes of a radio broadcast. Trompo Magico also boasts an on-site snack bar and colourful outdoor play areas.

Getting around Zapopan

Zapopan is around 20 minutes’ drive from the centre of Guadalajara and 40 minutes from Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla International Airport, which has flights to destinations across the Americas. Buses connect to Zapopan and travel throughout the city.
