Central Jakarta is Jakarta’s Manhattan, home to glittering skyscrapers and shopping malls, as well as national monuments and museums. Shopping and dining take centre stage, but are closely followed by diverse markets and newly-developed public parks, which prove it’s possible to find a natural oasis in this concrete wilderness.
Things to do in Central Jakarta
One of the first things you’ll notice about Central Jakarta is its impressive collection of major landmarks, which depict significant moments in Indonesia’s history. The 137-metre-tall National Monument has an observation deck, museum and musical fountain, while the Prince Diponegoro statue celebrates Indonesia’s rebellion against Dutch occupation.
If you love history, you might want to venture further into the city to visit the National Museum, which houses Hindu sculptures, gold treasure and other exhibits on the Hindu Kingdoms. The nearby Proclamation Museum teaches the history of Indonesia’s independence through dioramas and propaganda posters.
Central Jakarta’s shopping malls, such as Plaza Indonesia and Citywalk Sudirman, sit alongside famous flea markets. Pasar Tanah Abang is ideal for finding hand-made garments, while Pasar Buru has stalls selling textiles, electronics and ancient coins from around the world. If the crowds become too much, seek reprieve in Menteng Park, a 40-hectare expanse of fountains, plants, winding pathways and live performers.
The most central of Jakarta’s five cities, Central Jakarta is the ideal launching pad to experiencing each unique district. Head west for street-food stalls and religious temples; east for creative art communities; north for scenic harbours, beaches and islands; and south for upscale shopping and nightlife.
Getting around Central Jakarta
Jakarta is best navigated via car or using the Transjakarta bus service, which covers the city north to south on reserved busways that don’t typically encounter city traffic. These provide the quickest means of transport, but if you prefer to drive yourself, hire cars can be picked up at Soekarno–Hatta International Airport.
