About Hamilton, Scotland

With a rich history dating back to the Kingdom of Strathclyde, Hamilton lies along the banks of the River Clyde to the south-east of Glasgow. It was originally known as “Cadzow” before being renamed after James Hamilton, a 15th-century Scottish nobleman and politician. Hamilton was once home to the explorer and missionary David Livingstone, whose house still stands today.

Things to do in Hamilton

In the heart of Hamilton is the Regent Shopping Centre, where you’ll find department stores and retailers selling everything from fashion to furniture. You can browse the vintage treasures at the Second Chance Charity Shop or relax over coffee and cake at Belles Tearoom. A short walk from the shopping centre is the Georgian-style Hamilton Old Parish Church.

If you're interested in the local history, visit the Low Parks Museum, which occupies a 17th-century residence designed by James Smith. The Portland Building’s main collection highlights the Cameronians or Scottish Rifles, who were involved in many campaigns over their 300-year history. Other exhibits highlight the area’s coal-mining past and the influence of the Clydesdale horse on the local agricultural industry.

Hamilton makes an excellent base for exploring Strathclyde Country Park, which lies along the banks of the River Clyde. It’s a popular recreational destination for locals, particularly rowers, and encompasses a man-made loch and several Roman-built remains. Strathclyde Country Park also marks the start of the Greenlink Cycle Path, which connects all the way to the centre of Motherwell.

Getting around Hamilton

Hamilton is around 20 minutes’ drive from the centre of Glasgow and 30 minutes from Glasgow Airport, which has flights to destinations across the globe. Regular trains connect to the Hamilton West and Hamilton Central railway stations while buses travel throughout the town.
