About Lake Toya

Lake Toya is located at the base of Mount Usu encompassed by the Shikotsu-Toya National Park in southwestern Hokkaido, Japan. It is bordered by the towns of Tōyako and Sōbetsu. The lake is famous for its scenery and historic volcanic activity and serves as a tourist oasis outside of the metropolitan areas of Hokkaido and nearby Sapporo.

The region is acclaimed for its relaxing hot springs and fireworks shows along with popular activities that include foot baths, hiking along the Nishiyama Crater Walking Trails, fishing, and camping. A notable lakeside attraction is the Volcano Science Museum which provides a simulation of the historic Mount Usu’s volcanic activity. Another place of interest is the Lake Toya Gurutto Chokoku Koen with its bountiful natural scenery interspersed with interesting art sculptures.

The Toyako Onsen bus terminal services the area of Lake Toya and is accessible via JR Limited Hakodate express train from Sapporo. Due to a limited number of buses, the best way to get around Lake Toya is by car. It is a two-hour drive from Sapporo.
