About Monti, Rome

Monti is a charming neighbourhood close to the historic centre of Rome, a short walk from the Colosseum and the ancient Roman Forum. The cobbled streets are sprinkled with lively cafes, gelaterias, quaint artisan shops, and fashion boutiques which are all waiting to be discovered.

Monti is a secret village in the centre of a thriving metropolis. It’s close to Santa Maria di Maggiore Basilica, the Colosseum, Palazzo Quirinale, and the Roman Forum. The charming streets are alive with creatives, and it has a bohemian vibe with a wonderful café culture and excellent cuisine. The area is close to some of the most well-preserved ancient structures in the city. Visit Domus Aurea and see the ruins of Nero’s grand villa or head to Trajan’s Market which offers a glimpse into Roman architecture at its best. This fascinating structure is said to be the world’s oldest shopping mall dating back to 100-110 AD. It is still possible to visit several levels of this ancient multi-storey complex and catch sight of the delicate marble flooring and the remains of its ancient library. The famous statue of Moses by Michelangelo is located in Monti, at the Basilica of San Pietro in Vincoli. This striking Renaissance statue dates back to around 1513 and is a fine example of the great sculptor and artists work. For those looking for something other than pasta or pizza to dine on, Monti is the place to be. In addition to the plethora of Italian trattorias, there is also the option to dine on sushi or Indian food and visit one of the most popular gelato shops in the city.

Monti is central to many of Rome’s historic attractions, therefore, it’s an easy area to reach either on foot or via public transport. Disembark the bus or subway at Cavour or the Colosseum and walk a few minutes to the neighbourhood. It takes around 10 minutes’ walk from the Colosseum to Monti and just over 10 minutes from the popular Piazza Venezia.

Monti or “hills” refers to the surrounding hills on which the area was founded and is the largest district in Rome. Monti has always remained true to its heritage throughout the centuries, preserving relics, artefacts, ancient churches and basilicas within its labyrinth of streets. It is a place to explore off the beaten tourist track in the heart of the city. Visitors looking to find the true core of ancient Rome may just find it in Monti.
