About Nyhavn

A 17th-century entertainment district in Copenhagen, Nyhavn spreads along the waterfront and canal district, punctuated by the picturesque harbour. You’ll find colourful gabled shops and ancient cottages with cobbled walking paths leading to shopping on Kongens Nytorv. Walk down to the water for a narrated canal boat ride that winds through vibrant neighbourhoods and small villages.

Snag an outdoor table at one of the quayside canal cafes to watch sailboats and fishing vessels bobbing offshore. Hans Christian Andersen lived along the canal and wrote some of his most famous literary tales there, including “The Little Mermaid” and the “Princess and the Pea”.

Stay into the evening to enjoy craft beer, live music and seafood dining. You can also join a walking tour that includes wine and beer tasting and small-plate dining in various pubs, wine bars and eateries.

Getting There

Nyhavn stretches along the waterfront side at Kongens Nytorv Street and ends roughly at the harbour near Royal Playhouse. You can reach the district by subway to the Kongens Nytorv metro station or by bus to several stops near the playhouse or Amalienborg Palace. A cycling and pedestrian drawbridge connects Nyhavn to Christianshavn.
